Kongo Carved Horn

Kongo Carved Horn

Kongo Peoples, DR Congo

This is a rare and beautifully carved horn from the Kongo People of the DR Congo.  The carved figures establish the horn as belonging to that tribe as the figure on the end of the horn is a Kongo-Yombe Power Figure, while the figure in the middle shows all the attributes of a Kongo design with the high headpiece.  Carved Kongo horns are rare and most that have been documented do not include a second figure mounted astride the horn itself.  The purposes of this horn are unknown to the collector, though its importance is clear from the detailed and meticulous carving.
